This looks like a good solution if one needs a small binhex conversion
util.

Enclosed below is Howard Fukuda's excellent Desk Accessory
"BinHqx 1.02 DA'.  Shareware $5.   It dates 1990, but works
very fine with System 7.   Handles both Encoding/Decoding BinHex,
plus, 'Join&Decode' and 'Segment' features.

By setting the 'I/O buffer size' to the maximum, it operates
VERY quickly.  Works twice/threetimes faster than StuffIt's
translator!

This is  a list  based on  the lists  of entities  contained in  the ISO
3166:1988  standard, Third  edition  1988-08-15.  The original  standard
contains the  actual standard text,  followed by five lists  sorted into
five different  orders, both in English  and French, so this  is only an
extract and not  to be taken as  the entire standard. While  it has been
checked against  the standard, it  may possibly contain errors,  and the
standard  and  registration  newsletters  should  be  verified  for  any
critical application.

This copy has been updated through registration Newsletter III-51 and is
believed to be current through at least July 1993.

The Fortune program displays and reads aloud a random, hopefully humorous
aphorism in a small window on your screen.  It draws from a vast pool of
more than 1,600 "fortune cookie" phrases.  It makes for a great Startup
Items addition.  This is one of the first programs to take advantage of
Apple's new Speech Manager (MacinTalk replacement), currently available on
ftp.apple.com.

Fortune is compatible with any Macintosh with System 7.0 or newer, and
Apple's new Speech Manager with Macintalk Voices file installed.  Fortune
is distributed as shareware for $15, courtesy of the Morgan Davis Group.

Pentominoes is a board game where you must fit 12 pieces (of five squares
each) into a variety of boards with no pieces overlapping. A great
geometric puzzler that goes back 40 years or more!

Pentominoes 1.2 is mostly a technical revision of 1.1.  Cosmetic features
include a remove-piece feature (just doubleclick on any piece on the board
to remove it so you can reuse it somewhere else), save/save-as options for
saving games, and improved look-and-feel (as per Human Interface Guidelines).
Technical improvements include a standard preferences file, a more secure
self-integrity checker, and support for System 7 file structures.

System 6 and 7 compatible; supports B/W, grayscale, and color monitors;
includes sounds.  Sounds now work under system 6, but may require 6.0.7.

This game is free; there is no shareware fee.  You may redistribute it
as long as no fee is charged for it, with the exception of nominal disk
copying fees to cover costs.  For the latest version of Pentominoes or any

I cannot explain what is going on with my upload of The Archivist. I suggest
you pick it from  ftp.bio.indiana.edu in their incoming folder. The Archivist
version 4.0 was uploaded as 2 separate self expanding application and a short
text file.  The development of this application was supported by the Apple
Canada Education Foundation on which I am a member of the Board.

I am sure everyone dealing with numerous text files obtained from billboards ,
graduate students, secrataries, journalists, etc... will like the way The
Archivist handle those documents in a single file.

The Archivist is distributed by a few CD-ROM companies, America OnLine,
AppleLink... so why not SUMEX!

Here is a drag and drop application which appends version numbers (as
found in the 'vers' resources) to files. For example, "FooWriter"
becomes "FooWriter 1.2". It is written using Paul Hoffman's Dragonsmith
1.1 and so will recurse through folders. It is also clever enough to
handle aliases and existing version numbers (hopefully avoiding "FooWriter
1.2 1.2" and the like).

Subject: Anybody else having problems with CP Anti-Virus?

My co-workers and I are experiencing consistent problems with the floppy
scanning (on insert) of CP Anti-Virus Control Panel.  Basically, you insert
 disk and get a minor crash.  A forced quit of the front application clears
things up until it happens again.  This does not happen all the time, and
not consistently with any particular floppy or kind of floppy.  It occurs
on all sorts of Macs from the IIsi on up to the Quadra 800, running System
versions 7.01 and 7.1.  Central Point is trying to resolve the problem
under the assumption that it's a conflict with Macintosh PC Exchange, but
since three of my machines aren't running that or any other DOS mounting
extension, I find that an unlikely answer.

Any info about other people having the problem, solutions, or failed
solutions is appreciated.

We have all kind of Macintoshes here. But we have problems with a lot of
monitors on LCII & LCIII. The monitors are Apple B&W monitors 12".
After a few months most of these monitors need repair.
Does anyone else have problems with this type of monitor?

Glad you're liking TidBITS! I plan to do a more in-depth look at the
VST ThinPack battery in the future, but suffice it to say for now
that it's not exactly a replacement battery since you actually get
more battery life if you use it WITH the PB100 battery. The reason
has to do with a smaller current draw allowing the batteries to both
last longer when used in conjunction, rather than when used separately.

No one that I know of makes a PB100 replacement battery, although
there are a couple of other big battery replacements that should work.

The VST ThinPack doesn't work with the Duos, but does work with all
other models of the PowerBook. It weighs 1.5 pounds and is .25" thick.
Runtime can go from 3 (180c) to 9 (PB100) hours, I guess when you're
using it in conjunction with the standard internal battery.

First time I've heard of that one.  From my experience, dealers are
usually not technically competent enough to figure out that you can't
plug in a lastest-generation microprocessor into a ROM socket.

We want to buy the fastest video board on the market, but we
are confused by the ads of companies, which all show benchmarks
proving that their board is faster than the competition.

I know that the SuperMac Thunder II and Thunder II light were
the best for a long time, but now RasterOps with Paintboard Turbo XL
(speedy name, isn't it :-) and Radius with the Precision Color Pro
claim comparable performance at a lower price.

Does anybody has experience with any of these boards ? I would
in particlular welcome comparisons between them. I haven't found
any info on sumex, so I will post a summary if I get sufficient
responses.

digest that includes both new files and discussion.  However,
since i read the comp.sys.mac.digest newsgroup, it's overkill
to get the discussion twice.  Is there a way to subscribe to
the digest's new files list without getting the discussion?
I seem to remember this as a capability, but I don't
remember how.  And if this is possible how do I do it, and
how do I unsubscribe from the current version I get? Thanks...

Subject: Ditch the HMS system--go with millidays!

One problem with millidays is that a day is not constant. Over the long
term, days are getting longer, and over the short term, lunar tidal
effects induce enough jitter so that anything much smaller than a
microday would be meaningless.

The general problem with time units is synchrony -- there isn't any. We
have years, months, and days because of discrete, asynchronous periodic
events. It makes no sense to cast them all in terms a single event,
especially one as long as a day. (So the real question is: why did an
animal with ten fingers decide to chop a day into 24 units? :-)

(What does all this have to do with the Mac? Not much, I guess!)

Interesting comments on SilverLining. I've been using SL for
quite some time but was thinking of changing to HDT because
La Cie have always been so poor about upgrades (no notification
of upgrades, gouging on the System 7.0-compatible version, etc),
and I would like something that understands how to enable caches
on Rodime drives (I believe only HDT can do this ?).

However, as I'm getty a Quadra 840av pretty soon, what I'd really
like to know now is: which hard disk driver software is going to
support SCSI Manager 4.3 ? I think I heard something about a product
called 'Drive 7' - does this ring any bells ? Can we expect HDT
or SL to support SCSI Manager 4.3 any time soon ? Do current versions
of HDT and SL work OK with the new 'av' machines or to I have to go
back to HD SC Setup (which I wouldn't mind too much, if only it
supported multiple Mac partitions - I really don't want one enormous
1 Gb partition...) ?

What is the easiest way to get all the technotes from Apple ?

An old technotes archive files is dts/mac/tn/old-tech-note-archive.hqx, but
what about the newer ones ?

They are very handy when having to browse for certain subjects and
transferring all by hand is a probably not the easiest method.

I got Detective, which logs start and stop time for system and apps
into a file.  I don't think it will log net accesses.  It's currently
available as shareware from America On Line, but not from info-mac.  I
tried to contact the author for permission to upload to info-mac, but
couldn't figure out his email address from the documentation.

I'm working on Alpha/TCL code to summarize the logs by app, but
haven't got that working yet.

Subject: LW8 PROBLEM!! - doesn't work on CAPS connected printer

G'Day all,

I recently installed LW 8 on a network of macs, which connected to printers
(Apple LWNTX) via CAPS (the Mac are connected to the Unix box/CAPS thru
Gatorbox).
When I tried to setup the printer (Chooser), I had to do it manually, since
auto-setup doesn't work, and neither does the Update Info from Printer Info
selection.
Anyway, after selecting the right PPD file for the printer - manually, I tried
to print. Fine. One minute later I had a warning that there is an error in
printing, and asked to switch to PrintMonitor. Once I was in PrintMonitor,
I had a dialog box saying that the job couldnot be printed, and asked whether
I want to Cancel Printing or to Try Again (also a writing: error type
-9889(?))

When I selected Try Again, this is what I got on the Message Area (Bottom
window):

- Initializing, then
- Initializing, then
- Initializing, then
- Initializing, then
I got the same error dialog box again...

Does any of you aware/know of the cure ? Please reply, I'll summarise the
finding.

We received two responses to my recent posting asking for
recommendations on the subject Mac software to replace what we
are now using on our PeeCees (LOTUS/ReportWriter).
John Rosborough suggested FileMaker Pro.
Ilan Szekely suggested AddressBook 3.6.1.
We are obtaining copies of each and will give them a detailed
evaluation.

OzTeX 1.6 is now available at the following ftp sites (among others):

No new PK files have been added to the distribution, but current OzTeX
users will still need to get all the following files:

  fonts.sit.hqx
  formats.sit.hqx
  inputs.sit.hqx
  oztex.sit.hqx
  read-me.hqx

Here are edited highlights from the "Changes to OzTeX 1.5" help file:

* OzTeX now supports virtual fonts.  The TeX menu has a new item called
  "Fix VFs in DVI" which can be used to select a DVI file and replace all
  virtual font references with appropriate characters from actual fonts
  (or with the specified rules and other DVI commands allowed in VF files).
  There is another new item, "Fix VFs after TeX", which if ticked tells
  OzTeX to fix any VFs in the DVI file created at the end of a TeX run.

* The PostScript TFMs in the PS sub-folder in TeX-fonts have been replaced by
  a new set of files that follow Karl Berry's font naming standard; using
  them will make your TeX/LaTeX source files much more portable.
  These new PostScript TFMs are meant to be used in conjunction with a
  set of corresponding virtual font files.  The VF files are stored in a
  new sub-folder, VF-files, which has been added to the TeX-fonts folder.
  (The VF and TFM files came from the SparcTeX distribution put together
  by Sebastian Rahtz.)

* The Default config file has a new parameter which tells OzTeX where to
  look for VF files.  Multiple folders can be specified.

* The two config file parameters that tell OzTeX where to look for PK files
  and PostScript files can also specify multiple folders.

* The Times-LaTeX format has been replaced by a new NFSS-LaTeX format (this
  includes the New Font Selection Scheme).  The TeX-inputs folder has a new
  sub-folder called NFSS which contains the source files and documentation.
  The LaTeX sub-folder has been updated with more recent source files; these
  were used to build the NFSS-LaTeX format and a new LaTeX format.

* TeX-inputs also has a new PSNFSS sub-folder which contains style files
  that make it easy to use PostScript fonts with the NFSS-LaTeX format.
  (The new files in the NFSS, PSNFSS and LaTeX sub-folders all came from
  the UK TeX archive.  Thanks again Sebastian!)

* A new application called OzTools is distributed with OzTeX.  OzTools lets
  you run the following TeX-related tools: TFtoPL, PLtoTF, VFtoVP and VPtoVF.
  The standard file dialog for each tool has a "Do all files" button so you
  can process all the TF/PL/VF/VPL files in a folder.

* The name and size of the font used in the OzTeX window can now be selected
  using the new "Font" and "Size" items in the File menu.

* The "Print DVI" and "View DVI" file dialogs now show all files with names
  that end in ".dvi" (as well as all DVI files created by OzTeX).
  The Option key kludge for showing all types of files has been removed.

* If the new "Use Format in Log" item in the TeX menu is ticked, then before
  typesetting *.tex OzTeX will look in *.log to see which format should be
  used.
  (In log files created by OzTeX the format appears after the "&" on line 2.)
  If the log file exists and the format is known (ie. exactly matches one of
  the formats at the bottom of the TeX menu) then OzTeX automatically updates
  the current format, if necessary.  If the log file does not exist or does
  not
  contain a known format then the current format will be used.

* If you start up OzTeX by double-clicking on any file of the form *.xxx
  (eg. *.dvi, *.log, *.aux) then *.tex will appear in the TeX menu and *.dvi
  will appear in the Print and View menus.  Also, if *.log exists and contains
  a known format then OzTeX will automatically make this the current format
  so you can immediately typeset the *.tex file by hitting Command-T.

* I've added better support for the various commercial PostScript fonts
  that can be used with TeX (eg. Lucida, MathTime, or Textures' CM/PS fonts).
  When you specify "<foo" in a config file to download a non-resident
  PostScript font, OzTeX will now check the type of the given file.
  If "foo" is of type LWFN (a standard Mac PostScript font file) then OzTeX
  will download the relevant POST resources.  If "foo" is not of type LWFN
  then OzTeX simply downloads all the text in the file's data fork.

* Yet another config file change: instead of using "M" or "A" to specify the
  encoding scheme for PostScript screen fonts, you must now give the name of
  an encoding file, or "nil" if the screen font uses the same encoding as its
  corresponding TFM file.  An encoding file gives you complete control over
  which Macintosh character is displayed when a particular PostScript
  character
  in a DVI file is to be viewed or printed on a non-PostScript printer
  (note that encoding files are NOT used during PostScript printing).

* A new config file called "View CM using PS" uses encoding files to allow
  Computer Modern text fonts to be previewed using PostScript screen fonts.
  If you have TrueType or Adobe's Type Manager then you'll find these screen
  fonts are much easier to read than scaled PK fonts.  However, it is not
  possible to find PS equivalents for all CM characters, so some characters
  (such as the "ff", "ffi" and "ffl" ligatures) will appear incorrect.

* The "Show Config" item in the Config menu has been replaced by a
hierarchical
  menu which can show all current configuration parameters or some important
  subsets: folders and files, TeX parameters, PostScript fonts, or all the
  current encodings for PostScript screen fonts.

* OzTeX has been compiled to take advantage of a 68020 or newer CPU.
  Typesetting is about 10% faster.  (Mac Plus users will get an apologetic
  message if they try to run this new version of OzTeX.  I will supply a
  Mac Plus version to registered OzTeX users on request.)

Subject: Pasting sound into a silent QT movie -- quickly and cheaply?

Is there a way to paste a sound into a silent QuickTime movie (e.g., a
morph) without having to use a commercial product such as Premiere,
VideoFusion, etc.?

I tried doing it in MoviePlayer, but it put the sound with blank frames
BEFORE the silent frames.  The tools in the QuickTime Starter Kit do not
let you work with a movie's picture and sound separately.

Is there another way to do this, or a public domain program that can do
this?

Is there a utility out there that can read in PICT files and crop all
excess white space from around the picture? I have several thousand images
that contain a small object surrounded by whitespace which causes all
sorts of headaches later on. I would love a drag and drop utility that simply
cropped the picture and saved it under the same name (or at least a default
derived name...)

Go figure. As soon as I hit the SEND button to post the above question, I
remembered where I heard about the `040 emulation. I trekked to the library,
and there it was, the cover story of August issue of _Byte_! Duh!

In any event, the PowerPCs (regardless of vendor, as I understand it) will
support 68LC040 emulation! Unfortunately, this means that 68040 FPU and MMU
calls are not supported (which would have been the case anyway in 68020
emulation). BTW-the Byte article is very detailed-it is worth a look (standard
disclaimers again).

Subject: Problem with alias resolving

I am using System 7.1 on a Mac IIsi, and I'm getting some inconsistent
behaviour. When I 'Get Info' on an alias, there's a button 'Find Original'
which opens the folder containing the file the alias points to.
The information held in the Original: field of the alias should
then be updated to point to the current location of the original file.
The inconsistency is that on some files the information is updated,
and on others it's not. The alias isn't locked, nor is it's folder.
I've tried disabling extensions and replacing the Finder.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions about this (admittedly trivial)
problem.

Subject: Repainting the StartupScreen (was Symantec (C))

Al Bloom's gripe about Symantec's startup box failing to repaint the
Startup screen on his secretary's computer reminded me of my own
complaint. I use MultiDisk, part of ALSoft's power utilities. When
the INIT loads at startup it asks for a password for the partition
that it is set to mount, but then when the box goes away I am left
with a white rectangle in the middle of my Startup screen (currently
the excellent "Intel Outside" picture that somebody posted recently)
which never gets repainted.

I partly solved my problem by using an INIT manager to move the
MultiDisk INIT to as late in the loading order as it will go, so
the unsightly white patch is only visible for a couple of seconds.

I suppose with SAM that you haven't got this flexibility, maybe it
has to load first in the order (I don't know, I don't use it.) And
in any case it doesn't excuse the Symantec support man's ignorant
response.

However it occurs to me that a partial fix of sorts could be
constructed by a suitably knowledgeable programmer (which I'm not).
If someone wrote an INIT that did nothing but redraw the Startup Screen,
you could simply name it so that it immediately followed the offending
program and it could do its trick every startup.

The INIT would have to be very well behaved, mind you, because it
would have to be loadable anywhere in the order, but that would be
easy because it wouldn't have to patch any traps or use any RAM.

Of course you'd lose sight of any INIT icons that had been displayed
along the bottom of the screen so far. A small price to pay for
being spared the ghastly blank rectangle!

So go to it, knowledgeable programmers. A frivolous topic to comment
on, I know, but aesthetics is important to us (that's why we use
Macs).

Does anybody know how to send a " break signal" using Apple
"Adjustable KeyBoard". I am using MacTelnet 2.5 to connect to the university

SLIP (Serial-Line-IP) and PPP (Point-to-Point-Protocol) are protocols
and programs/extensions that run an IP Internet-connection over a serial
line.  Normally your Mac is connected to the Internet by Ethernet or
TokenRing but using SLIP or PPP you can use a serial line, typically
a modem connection to use the Internet.

You need a high speed modem and a Mac with MacSLIP or MacPPP and a UNIX
machine which runs a SLIP or PPP service or daemon.  Installing MacSLIP/
MacPPP ist fairly simple, you just drag an init to the extensions folder
and then configure the rest with a control panel.
Installing SLIP or PPP on the UNIX machine requires a bit more work (and
experience) as you will have to build a new kernel for the UNIX machine.
Ask your local network administrator if SLIP or PPP are supported on your
net if you cannot do it on your own.

Once you have installed it you dial the number of the UNIX machine and
then you Mac connects you to this remote host.  It will then establish
an IP connection between both computers using the modem/telephone line.
Once the connection is established you can use all TCP/IP programs
like Eudora, TheNews, Fetch, etc. as if you were connected directly to
the Internet.  In most cases you will need a user account on the UNIX host.

MacSLIP is not in the public domain, it is available from HydePark Software.
MacPPP *is* PD, check sumex or umich for the latest version.   The UNIX
software is PD too, it can be found on various ftp-Servers.

We have just tried SLIP yet but I have heard that PPP is a bit faster
and efficient.   But just try for yourself.

corrupt in some way.  Does anyone have a working one they can re-submit
